Food Wars Misses Strong Competitor

March 23rd, 2010 9:00 PM by Kent Black

Loyal Black’s Barbecue Fans,

This evening, a new episode of the Travel Channel show Food Wars will begin airing. The focus of tonight’s episode will be Lockhart barbecue, but one of the strongest competitors in Lockhart (that’s us!) will notably be missing from tonight’s show. When we first learned about the show taping earlier this year, we were bummed to find out that it would be focusing specifically on the family rivalry between Kreuz and Smitty’s. We had lots of crazy ideas float around our team, including showing up at the Courthouse Square the day of the final competition to enter as a surprise third contestant. In the end we opted not to go that route, so you won’t see us featured on this evening’s show.

Starting this past weekend, we began to receive e-mails and speak to people at the restaurant who wanted to know why one of the best barbecue’s in Texas wouldn’t be represented. “I’ll be watching,” one fan told us. “My wife and I, my sister, and my dad will all be in front of the tube to watch the competition suffer,” writes another. In the end, any competition that spotlights the delicious meat being served here in Lockhart every day is a win for all of us in our community.

For those of you visiting our site for the first time today, along with those of you who have been away from Lockhart for too long (more than a day or two), we do want to extend a discount to you for any orders placed through our Online Store. Use coupon code FOODWARS anytime through the end of the year to receive 10% off your online order. You’re only a couple of days away from tasting some of the best barbecue Texas has to offer.

Do you want to voice your support for the Travel Channel including us in their next visit to Lockhart? Simply leave a comment in response to this blog post. We’ll compile them and pass them along to the producers at the Travel Channel. Maybe we’ll even get an opportunity to battle the winner of tonight’s Food Wars in the ultimate showdown of Lockhart barbecue. :-)

Thanks as always for your support,

Amen and amen. Having eaten at all of the Luling and Lockhart spots many times, Black’s is easily up there with both Kreuz and Smitty’s in my book. In fact I have had consistently better BBQ at Black’s than either of them. If they really want to have a taste off, it should definitely include Black’s and probably City Market in Luling, as well. That would sure be a great BBQ battle!

I was observant enough to see the “Black’s barbecue” sign during the show. Like you said earlier…I think they were focusing on the rivalry within the Smith family as much as on the products themselves. Love to read about BBQ battles…then I am one of those who feel that ANY BBQ is better than no BBQ. My son just moved to the Metroplex and I cannot wait to do my own personal BBQ tour of Texas.

You guys ARE the best in Texas. We visited from MN in June this year and visited all the great BBQ places in Texas…we thought your rings, brisket, and turkey beat the competition easily. Thank you for your food and your history…and please dont lose focus on your food. Next time, we only stop at your place!

Thanks,
Dan
